Background of the Study
Praise-singers have historically been central to Yoruba cultural ceremonies in Ife Central, serving as custodians of oral history and tradition. Through rhythmic recitations, poetic language, and musical performances, they celebrate historical events, honor leaders, and reinforce communal values. Their art is an essential medium for preserving cultural narratives and ensuring the transmission of indigenous knowledge. However, modernization and shifting entertainment paradigms have influenced the traditional roles and techniques of praise-singers. Recent studies show that while praise-singing remains an important cultural practice, its methods are evolving in response to contemporary influences (Adebayo, 2023; Femi, 2024). This study appraises the contemporary role of praise-singers in cultural ceremonies, examining their contribution to Yoruba heritage and the challenges they face (Yetunde, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite their historical importance, the role of praise-singers in Yoruba cultural ceremonies is undergoing transformation due to modernization and changing cultural values. The traditional methods of performance are being overshadowed by contemporary entertainment influences, potentially diminishing the cultural impact of praise-singers. There is limited empirical research on how these changes affect the preservation of indigenous narratives and the continuity of cultural ceremonies. This study addresses this gap by evaluating the evolving role of praise-singers in Ife Central and exploring strategies to sustain their traditional functions.
